Hi, I’m John Evans, a retired registered nurse, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. I’ve lived most of my life in St. Louis.

My interest in photography began as a nurse in the trauma ICU at St. Louis University Hospital. I’d take photos of my fellow nurses during our shifts, being careful not to show patient’s faces or identifiable information, of course.

In 1995 I attended Missouri Photo Workshop where I began my journey into freelance photojournalism. Tom Keller, the former head of Magnum Photography gave a talk during the workshop. One thing he said has become my motto, “Never do anything photographically that compromises your humanity.”

I strongly believe that never in our nation’s history has there been a greater need for truth telling then right now and that is what I strive to do with my camera.
